Class Description

  • What are the everyday practical things you wish you’d learned in school?  From first impressions to flat tires to financial literacy, this course will cover those aspects of adulting that often fall through the cracks in traditional academic curricula.  This class will cover social graces and etiquette, everyday skills such as first aid, internet safety, and changing a tire, and introductory financial literacy concepts such as establishing a household budget and compound interest.  More than a simple “life skills” class, this is hands on, practical learning that will serve students for the rest of their lives.

Class Description

  • Students will learn the fundamentals of journalism through a combination of classroom lectures and hands-on, practical execution.  Simultaneously, students will also be involved in the production of The Compass, the Pathfinders Yearbook.  Aspects of this class include:
  • Producing stories for a newsletter for the PathFinders community, consisting of writing news stories, interviews and other articles.
  • Contributing to the design and content of the PathFinders 2024-2025 Compass Yearbook.
    • A particular emphasis will be placed on photojournalism, so access to a quality camera is recommended but not required.

3D Design & Printing

Class Description

The purpose of this class is to take students from being passive consumers of technology to active creators of the physical world. This course covers the entire lifecycle of a product: from the spark of an idea, through digital drafting and 3D modeling, to the final physical manifestation on the print bed. We will master the mechanics of FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) printers, the science of material properties, and the artistry of organic digital sculpting.

This class will have no textbook. The curriculum is built upon real-world engineering challenges and the “open-source” philosophy that drives the 3D printing community. Handouts, digital guides, and video tutorials will be provided via Google Classroom. Classwork will be hands-on, involving machine calibration, destructive testing, and iterative design.
